Celebrity Clothing Lines

By: Sophia Varga

In the arena of celebrity fashion lines, there are clear cut hits and misses. Many of the actor/singer/performers who become designers are better off on the pages of US Weekly than on the pedal of a sewing machine. Being able to put together a Saturday night outfit does not make you Marc Jacobs.  However, with the help of talented designers behind the scenes, many stars have made the crossover into skinny jeans and hobo bags unscathed and sometimes with incredible success. See the winners and losers below.

Winners:

Jessica Simpson collection:

Her collection appeals to the masses with its reasonable prices and safe designs. The fashion empire is currently worth one billion dollars, making Ms. Simpson the most prosperous celebrity designer ever.

L.A.M.B.  Gwen Stefani

Stefani has long been lauded for her unique style.  She even designed the wedding dress of one of her band mate’s fiancées before she came out with the uber popular L.A.M.B line. Heavily influenced by the Harajuku girls of Japan, she seems to be heavily involved in the actual designs rather than just the face of the line.

Elizabeth and James

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are miles away from their stint as Michelle Tanner on Full House. Their designs are worn by the hottest actors and actresses in Hollywood.  While the pieces are priced high, they are perfectly tailored.  Everyone from Cameron Diaz to Jennifer Lopez has been photographed in their pieces.

Failures:

Material Girl by Madonna:

Madonna co-created her line with her daughter Lourdes (aka Lola).  While Lola is stylish and beautiful, the designs are made from painfully cheap material and probably last about as long as a middle school crush.

House of Dereon by Beyoncé:

While Beyoncé is inarguably one of the most beautiful entertainers of this generation, her fashion line named after her grandmother sorely misses the mark.  Unfortunately the line is cheesy and shoddy, a poor representation of one of the sexiest females in the biz.
